What do I need before my first export shipment from India?

An Importer Exporter Code (IEC) from DGFT, a GST registration, a current account with an AD-category bank to receive payment, and any licence or registration specific to your product. Tell us what you plan to ship and we will walk you through the order to do it in.

Which Incoterm should I quote — FOB, CIF or DDP?

Under FOB you deliver to the port and the buyer pays the sea freight. Under CIF you also cover freight and insurance to the destination port. Under DDP you deliver to the buyer’s door with duties paid. New exporters usually start with FOB and move to CIF once they are comfortable with freight costs.

Which documents travel with an export consignment?

Typically a commercial invoice, a packing list, the shipping bill, the bill of lading or air waybill, and a certificate of origin. Some markets and products also ask for a phytosanitary, health or pre-shipment inspection certificate.

How are international payments usually settled?

The common terms are advance payment, a letter of credit (LC), or documents against payment or acceptance (DP/DA). Which one fits depends on how well you know the buyer and the country — an LC costs more but protects a first-time deal.
